Channel O, the 17 year old music channel, just unveiled the nominees of this years’ Channel O Africa Music Video Awards (CHOMVA). And this year (like any other year) seems to be a battle of the West Africans and just bits and pieces of East and South Africa. But as much as that’s the case our very own Sauti Sol and Elani made it to the nomination list.
CHOMVA are the only public voted annual music video awards show broadcast around the continent that exclusively feature African artists. 2014 marks their 11th year. This year’s awards will take place on Saturday, 29 November at Nasrec Expo Centre in Soweto.
There are 14 categories in these awards. The videos are picked from any part of Africa. This year’s CHOMVA nominees are a showcase of Original, African music.
The boy band has been nominated for their song Nishike and Elani for their song Kookoo both in the category of Most Gifted East. They are not only competing against each other, but also Diamond with his song Number One, Navio with his No Holding Back, and Eddy Kenzo with Sitya Loss.
Leading with the most nominees this year is South African and new kid on these Hip Hop streets Cassper Nyovest; Mr “Caracara” himself K.O and Nigeria’s Davido with five nominations each. Davido has four nominations being for his hit song “Aye”. Seconding them is our Tanzanian neighbour Diamond Platinumz with Four nominations.
