Education Cabinet secretary, Belio Kipsang, has revealed that all Kenyan students will be required to rock uniform of the same colour and fabric. This comes after school buses and vans were all painted yellow.
According to a local newspaper, the ministry has promised local textile industries such as Rivatex, to manufacture the uniform. Details of the moves are already underway for the Eldoret-based company for this change.
School uniform has always been a huge symbol to differentiate students from from different schools. This change will be a major shift and will be a hard one to crack.
Other countries which have imposed this rule are Ghana and North Korea among others. All students from North Korea must wear a red scarf as well – this symbolizes their support for the North Korean political party.
We cannot wait to see how parents will react to this new rule as it will require them to dig their pockets again to buy new sets of uniform. As for the students, we will have to wait and hear their sentiments too.
